How is ear wax made?

Instructions

Difficulty: Easy

Things You’ll Need:

  • Q-Tip

Step1
I was recently asked How is Ear Wax made by one of my children so we did some research and this is what we have discovered. Ear wax is a sticky shiny substance found in the ear. The medical term for ear wax is cerumen. Ear Wax is secreted in the ears of all humans and many mammals.
Step2
Your Ear Wax is made in your outer ear canal. The area between the fleshy part of the ear on the outside of your head and your middle ear. The skin in the outer ear canal has special glands that produce the Ear Wax. After it is made it makes its way slowly to the opening of your ear and either falls out, is washed out or you can use a Q-Tip and gently remove it.
Step3
Ear Wax is part of your ears natural cleaning system and traps bacteria, small insects that may fly into your ear and other foreign objects. Ear Wax also protects your ears and helps to moisturize your skin and contains chemicals that help to fight off infections.

Tips & Warnings

  • Never insert anything into your ear except for the very very tip of a Q-Tip. When inserting a Q-Tip be very gentle and do not enter the Q-Tip any farther than the very very tip as it can damage your ear and prevent hearing loss!
