You can use text in a comment box to annotate an Excel cell, but have you ever considered using a picture? A picture says a thousand words!

Instructions

Difficulty: Moderately Easy

Things You’ll Need:

  • Microsoft Excel 2003

Step1
Select Cell Open an existing worksheet or create your worksheet, and then click the cell to which you want the comment connected.
Step2
Insert Comment Menu To create the Comment box, with the cell clicked, now click on Insert in the top menu bar, and then click on Comment. The Comment box will display and will most likely have the name of the software owner in the box. Delete the name; otherwise, it will show through the picture.
Step3
Format Comment Box Double click one of the borders of the Comment box and the Format Comment dialogue box will appear. From the Format Comment box, click the Colors and Lines tab.
Step4
Fill Effects On the Colors and Lines tab, in the Fill section, click the down arrow next to Color, and then click on Fill Effects.
Step5
Picture Tab On the Fill Effect dialogue box, click on the Pictures tab, and then click on the Select Picture button. Locate the picture you want and then click Insert. You will return to the Picture tab.
Step6
Click Aspect Ratio Also on the Picture tab, click the “Lock picture aspect ratio” box so the box is filled. This feature allows resizing of the picture without distorting it while grabbing a corner of the picture in the worksheet and dragging the corner in or out.

Click OK, and then OK again and your Comment box is now a picture in your worksheet.
Step7
Grab Corner To adjust the size of the Comment box picture, hover your mouse over one of the white circle CORNERS of the image until your pointer changes to a double-headed arrow (indicating you can move in or out). Click the mouse button to grab the corner and drag the corner in or out to the size you prefer.
Step8
Image Complete The image is complete. A border could have also been applied from the Format Comment box to frame the picture.
Step9
Hide-Display Comments You can show or hide comments by clicking on View in the top menu bar, and then click on Comments. Alternatively, if the Comments toolbar is active, you can click on the Hide All (Show All) Comments button.
