How to Add Glitter to a Picture Frame

Commemorate your special occasion with a one-of-kind picture frame from the most cherished designer you know: you. Take a dollar-store frame and convert it from cheap to chic in just a few minutes. Adding small details like a zigzag of glitter creates an unmistakable tie to the photo it frames and enhances memories of weddings, birthday parties or vacations.

Difficulty: Easy
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Decide on how much sparkle to bring to the frame. Based on your intended glitter pattern, consider creating or buying a stencil for an attractive outcome. Without a stencil, you can draw out an interesting pattern on the frame with a grease pencil or chalk. Or, follow your gut and design as you apply the glitter glue.

  2. Step 2

Select a work surface that won't hurt your heart if it becomes marred or stained by errant glitter. If such an area isn't available, lay down newspaper or tear out pages of old magazines to cover your work area. Clear out ample space to assemble your selected picture frame and design materials within arm's reach.

  3. Step 3

Create a loose zigzag design by applying gentle pressure to your bottle of glitter. Use heavier pressure when making dots or solid figures. Inconsistent pressure on the bottle during application creates uneven, unprofessional lines.

  4. Step 4

Move back and forth slowly over the width of the area to cover. You should have a consistent thread of glitter glue coming out at an even pace.

  5. Step 5

Select a complementary color for an added dimension of style to your picture frame. Use it to make swirls on top of the zigzag design. Let your imagination guide the design.

  6. Step 6

    *
Let it dry overnight to ensure you're getting the intended pattern. After the glitter glue dries, it may look very different than when wet. It often goes on bubbly looking and dries flat. Lighter glitter colors tend to look best after completely dry.

Tips & Warnings
  • Include a wet sponge or dishtowel in your supplies to make quick work of spills or mistakes.
  • Use clear-drying glitter glue for a more whimsical, dreamy look. Or, if money isn't an object, invest in vintage glass glitter for an antique touch.
  • Overestimate in case of spills or correcting mistakes. It's always better to have a little too much than run short.
