Step 1
Get a carry-on bag to fit all the items needed for the children. This can be either a backpack or another bag. It does not have to be large, but it should be able to contain all the essentials.

Buy a few cheap toys. The novelty is the important thing, not how much the items cost. Try going to a dollar store to find these new, inexpensive items.

Pack the bag. The bag should be filled with items to entertain the children. The bag should include stuffed animals, drawing pads, colored pencils or crayons, small books and other entertaining items. Hand-held video games can provide hours of entertainment for older children.

Step 4
Include music when packing the carry-on bag for kids. A CD player, tape player or MP3 player works great. Books on CD or cassette will also provide some much-needed entertainment.

Step 5
Bring snacks. Many airlines won't provide much in the way of snacks. Granola bars, grapes and a favorite candy work well as traveling snacks.

Step 6
Carry a sweater for each child since it can get cold. Sweaters can also double as blankets or pillows if the child wants to take a nap.
