Planning a vacation and anticipating the departure is great fun. Packing for the trip can be a chore. We worry about what to take and dread getting caught without just the right thing to wear. We're even willing to drag our entire wardrobes along just to keep that from happening. With some planning and vision, though, we can avoid overpacking and take along exactly what we need.

Difficulty: Moderate
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Determine the destination, length of stay and what will be needed for the trip. Research the climate and day and evening temperature. Make a list of activities and the appropriate dress for each.

  2. Step 2

Choose the best suitcase for the trip. Consider a wheeled case with a telescoping handle when purchasing new, or buy a trolley for a suitcase already owned. Let the length of stay determine the size of the suitcase.

  3. Step 3

Start a list of things to take on the trip. Create a page for each day of travel, including information about planned activities. List the apparel, shoes and accessories needed for each day, including changes of clothing.

  4. Step 4

Remember to include items like socks, hosiery and underwear. Include nightwear, a robe, pajamas, slippers, etc.

  5. Step 5

List all cosmetics, toiletries, over-the-counter medications and prescription drugs. Keep OTC medications and prescription drugs in their original containers. Purchase travel-size cosmetics and toiletries or use small, spill-proof travel bottles.

  6. Step 6

Review the lists for several and consolidate where possible. Consider coordinating wardrobe pieces to get more wear from fewer pieces. Start assembling the items to be packed.

  7. Step 7

Continue to review the lists and amend them. Pare down the items as much as possible. Travel light.

Tips & Warnings
  • Think about taking along an extra bag that folds flat for easy packing. Use the bag to carry home purchases, gifts and souvenirs.
  • Check with the airline to see if they are charging extra for checked baggage.
