Cheerleading started in the 1890s in Minnesota and has grown steadily in popularity ever since. Almost all high schools colleges and professional sports teams have a cheerleading squad. The high clasp is a hand position used in cheerleading. The right clasp is most often used in chants and dance routines.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Start in the cheerleading ready position. Your feet are shoulder-width apart, hands are behind your back and your back is straight.

  2. Step 2

Keep your back and arms straight during the high clasp. Do not move your head from side to side during this move. The head always needs to face forward.

  3. Step 3

Pull your hands up into a touchdown position. Extend your arms above your head, and tilt them forward slightly. Your arms need to cover up your ears. Hold your hands in fists with your thumbs pointing backward.

  4. Step 4

Pull your arm up in front of your body to perform a clasp. Cup your palms and push your hands together. The fingers on your right hand now slide into the space between your thumb and fingers.

  5. Step 5

Check your position. The inside of your arms touch the side of your face. Your hands are not too far forward or backward. When you perform the high clasp, your hands produce a popping sound.

  6. Step 6

Practice the high clasp until you can flow in and out of the move with ease.

Tips & Warnings
  • Always stretch before practicing the high clasp or any other cheerleading move.
  • Add variety to the high clasp and start from the high "V" cheerleading position.
