Catching a football is difficult enough as it is, but when a player puts on a helmet, it becomes that much tougher. The helmet can limit a player's field of vision and cause incomplete passes. Therefore, it is important for any player to be able to catch the football with helmet vision.

Difficulty: Moderately Challenging
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Practice with the helmet on as often as possible. Even if the drills are non-contact, it is important that the receiver wear a helmet to become familiar with catching the football with helmet vision.

  2. Step 2

Conduct the lonely boy drill on your own to practice catching the football with helmet vision. This drill is simply where a player puts on helmet and the throws the ball straight up in the air to himself and attempts to catch the football. This enables the receiver to become accustomed to looking for the football with the helmet on.

  3. Step 3

Utilize the blind pass drill to locate and catch a football with helmet vision. In this drill, you will stand with your back to the passer and another person will signal to the passer to throw the football. Then you will turn around just as the pass is coming close to you. This helps with reaction time and makes it easier to catch the football with helmet vision.

  4. Step 4

Study the routes and understand when and where on the field the quarterback is going to throw the football. If a player thoroughly comprehends exactly when and where on the field a pass is coming, he can estimate the placement of the pass and catch the pass even if there is a problem with the helmet vision.

  5. Step 5

Turn your head around quickly when the pass is coming in your direction. With helmet vision if a receiver does not turn the head quickly, he will not have time to adjust to the football with helmet vision impeding his sight lines.
