Being able to catch a fly ball is one of the most fundamental parts of softball. Before you move on to hitting and fielding ground balls, you must master how to catch a fly ball. Get in the outfield and get ready to shag some balls.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Take your first step back. Sometimes it takes a few seconds to track down where a ball is. That is why it is important to take your first step back in case the ball is hit over your head. Once you have found the ball, begin to set up to catch it. Remember that it is always easier to run in on a fly ball than to run back on one.

  2. Step 2

Get under the ball. Unless you have to run to catch it, try to set up directly where you think the ball will land.

  3. Step 3

Block out unnecessary distractions and focus on catching the ball. Right after the ball is hit, decide who will catch it by yelling, "I've got it!" If more than one fielder yells it, then the shortstop or center fielder will decide who has it. Block the sun out of your eyes by wearing sunglasses or eye black. Place your glove in the sun's path to shield your eyes.

  4. Step 4

Use two hands to catch the ball. Place your throwing hand on the back of the glove to support it. This prevents the ball from popping out of your mitt on high fly balls.

  5. Step 5

Come up ready to throw. Runners often try to tag up and run to the next base on fly balls. It is important that you are in the right position to get off a quick and accurate throw. Before you catch the ball, line up so you will catch it near the shoulder of your throwing arm. Be in an athletic position with your weight back on your right foot. Catch and throw the ball in one smooth motion. The throw should be low and hard. Hit the cutoff person chest-high with the throw. Keep the ball low if you are throwing to a base.
