A hard, low fastball can be a hitter's best friend or worst enemy. Being able to handle this pitch can mean the difference between knocking one over the fences or grounding into a double play. Handle the low, hard ones with a little finesse.

Instructions

Difficulty: Challenging

Things You’ll Need:

  • Baseball bat
  • Ball
Step1
Start with the proper batting stance. Pull the bat back as far as you can and keep the barrel of the bat straight. Develop a routine when you stand in the box and do it after every pitch.
Step2
Anticipate when you will get a low fastball. You are most likely to see a low fastball when there is a runner on first because the pitcher will try to get you to hit into a double play.
Step3
Keep your head down as if you were trying to follow the pitch. By keeping your head down, it starts a chain reaction with the rest of your body that helps drive the low ones.
Step4
Hit what the pitcher gives you. In other words, go with the pitch. If it is low and inside, turn on it and aim for the fences. It is better to aim for the opposite-field gap when the pitch is low and outside.
Step5
Finish high on your follow through when swinging. The ball will be a grounder or low line drive if you follow through low. The ball will be a fly ball or high line drive if you follow through high.
