Step 1
Take a lot of ground balls. Infielders have to field ground balls more than fly balls, so you'll want to take ground ball practice every day to develop consistency and keep your defense at the top of your game.
-
Step 2
Keep your eye on the ball and field in cleanly into your glove. Get into the habit of doing this and not rushing the transfer from your glove to your hand so you can stay consistent and controlled when you're in a game.
-
Step 3
Work on your throws to other bases and be accurate. You'll want to spend plenty of time with your teammates practicing throwing and hitting their targets after fielding a ball. Practice making strong, accurate throws.
-
Step 4
Practice covering bases and defending against runners. You'll need to be able to receive throws, make tags and avoid sliding runners. Practice all these situations so you'll know what to do when it's game time.
-
Step 5
Field bunts in practice. Work on charging bunted balls, bare-handing the ball and making plays. Work on understanding the smart play in a bunt situation depending on what's going on in the game.
-
Step 6
Play hard in practice, just as you would in a real game. What you do in practice carries over into your game, so develop a good work ethic and play hard during practice.
