When you're just starting out learning to ride a unicycle, you'll quickly find that a nice, moderately tall wall is your best friend. It'll gladly hold you up and allow you to cling to it while you struggle not to fall. It can be one of the best tools you can use as you do exercises that allow you to become more accustomed to balancing and riding on a unicycle.

Difficulty: Moderately Challenging
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Wall
  1. Step 1

Find a likely wall that is tall enough for you to drape an arm over when you are on a unicycle. A wall is your friend and can help you balance when you are learning to ride a unicycle.

  2. Step 2

Mount your unicycle by tipping it back toward you, putting your dominant foot on the pedal (when it's at its lowest point), and pushing yourself upright with your back foot. Make sure you hold onto the wall while you're doing this as it will help you balance on your unicycle.

  3. Step 3

Do your walking exercises while you are against a wall. If you hang onto a wall as you're on a unicycle, you'll find it's easier to stay upright as you're learning. While you're facing in one direction and holding onto the wall, pedal back and forth one hundred times, then turn around and do it in the other direction. Doing these exercises will help you gain a better sense of balance while on a unicycle.

  4. Step 4

Put one foot on the wheel and make it turn forward and back one hundred times, then do it one hundred times while you're facing in the other direction with the other foot. Holding onto the wall as you do these exercises will help you get the feel for the unicycle, hastening you to the point where you will be able to ride the beast without clinging to the wall for support.

  5. Step 5

Hang onto the handle, or the front portion of the seat, of the unicycle as you are balancing while against a wall. As you are holding onto the handle, make yourself more accustomed to the feeling of leaning from side to side as you do your pedal rocks (pedaling forward and back). As a unicycle has the capacity to move with you-—forward and back, side to side—-it pays to become accustomed to how this feels while holding onto the wall. It will make the transition to leaving the wall behind far easier.
