When translated from its native Japanese, Nunchucks means wooden flail. A flail is a trashing device used in farming or in combat when a stick swings while it is attached to something else. In martial arts, the nunchucks are used a weapon for defense or offense. The thumb and finger spin is used as a strike or as a transition.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Get into position with your nunchucks on your shoulder and your feet shoulder-width apart. Get a good grasp on the nunchucks.

  2. Step 2

Lean forward gently and pull the nunchucks down for one strike. Stop when your hand reaches your waist and straighten your back. This builds speed, which is needed for the thumb spin.

  3. Step 3

Pull your hand back up toward your shoulder and spin the chucks around your thumb. To do a thumb spin, flip your wrist to turn the nunchucks. Release your grip as you twist your wrist and straighten your hand. Point your thumb up. Let the nunchuck spin around your thumb and grab the first chuck as it comes around. When the spin finished, the nunchucks are upside down.

  4. Step 4

Flip your wrist and swing the nunchucks again. This time, release all the fingers but the index or forefinger. You may have to bend your finger to hold on to the weapon.

  5. Step 5

Swing the nunchucks around your fingers and grab the nunchucks when they come back around.

  6. Step 6

Catch the nunchucks or swing the nunchucks over your shoulder and back into the ready position.

Tips & Warnings
  • This is a complicated move. Many times people lose control of their nunchucks. Use caution when practicing these in close proximity to anyone else.
