The martial arts weapon that is made of two sticks linked together with a chain or rope is called a nunchuck. Nunchucks are made of solid wood. These weapons are used for quick strikes and to distract the opponent. The up and down nunchuck strike is a basic nunchuck move all martial artists needs to learn.

Difficulty: Moderate
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Grasp one end of the nunchuck and throw the other side over your shoulder. Always do up and down sticks on the same shoulder that you hold the nunchuck with. Remember, hand placement is one thumb length from the top of the nunchuck.

  2. Step 2

Pull the nunchuck straight down and flip your wrist to spin the nunchuck one time. Make sure your grasp is tight. Loose grips cause the nunchuck to spin out of control.

  3. Step 3

Stop when the nunchuck is even with your leg. Do not let the nunchuck swing too far backward. This causes loss of control.

  4. Step 4

Flip your wrist and pull the nunchuck back up into the starting position. Let the nunchuck spin one time on the way up. Do not swing too hard or the nunchuck will hit you.

  5. Step 5

Extend your arm once you gain control of the up and down movement. This allows you to strike further out.

  6. Step 6

Practice controlling the chucks and add one or two more spins as you move up and down.

  7. Step 7

Add the up and down strike to other moves, such as the L strike, to create combinations.

Tips & Warnings
  • Nunchucks are weapons and should not be played with frivolously.
