How to Do Nunchuck Wrist Spins

Nunchucks were first used as farming equipment by rice and wheat farmers to break the rice and wheat away from the stack. Noticing the quick movements of the nunchucks, martial artist began to use them as weapons. In martial arts, the nunchuck is used mostly to distract an opponent so you can strike. Today, nunchucks are used in martial arts competitions and exhibitions.

Instructions
  1. Step 1

    Stand up straight and raise the arm holding the nunchucks chest high. Hold the nunchuck one thumb length from the chain or rope. Point your thumb toward the chain or rope.

  2. Step 2

    Hold your hand out with your thumb pointing sideways and knuckles pointing up.

  3. Step 3

    Turn your hand so your thumb points upward and one side of the nunchuck rests on the back of your hand. Your hand is inside the nunchucks. Do not swing them around too fast or you may lose control of them.

  4. Step 4

    Release your hand and open your fingers. The nunchucks are balanced on your hand and wrist.

  5. Step 5

    Twist your hand around and grab the other side of the nunchuck. Until you learn this move you will probably drop your nunchucks. This is normal.

  6. Step 6

    Turn your hand the other direction and repeat the process.

  7. Step 7

    Practice wrist spins slowly and gradually work on moving faster. Work at one speed until you get the movements timed right and then speed it up.

Tips & Warnings
  • Wrist spins are used as transitions to link other moves together.
  • Never play with your nunchucks. Nunchucks are weapons and have caused serious injuries.
