Binding is the length of material that is used to finish a quilt and sew together the edges. To get a length of binding that will be long enough to go completely around the edge of your quilt, you will need to sew several strips together.

Difficulty: Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  1. Step 1

Measure all four sides of the quilt to determine the length of the binding. Add 14 inches to that measurement to be sure that you have enough binding.

  2. Step 2

Cut your binding fabric into 2-inch wide strips. The width of the binding strip determines how the size of the edging of your quilt. A 2-inch strip will give you a 1/2-inch edge with the two 1/4-inch seam allowances and the fabric being folded. If you want a larger edge, simply cut a wider strip.

  3. Step 3

Lay two strips together so that the right sides are facing and so that one end of the strips are perpendicular to each other. The ends of both of the strips should extend beyond the edges of the other strip.

  4. Step 4

Pin the two strips so that they can't move. Sew a diagonal line across the two ends of the strips from the top left corner where they overlap to the bottom right. Cut away the excess fabric leaving enough for a 1/4-inch seam allowance.

  5. Step 5

Unfold the two pieces of fabric so that they are both right side up. Press the seam open with the iron.

  6. Step 6

Repeat Steps 2 through 6 until the binding strip matches the length you determined in Step 1.
