Bookmarks make great gifts for anyone who loves to read. Instead of purchasing them in the store, you make your own personalized versions. The steps are easy, and the result can make for an attractive and practical keepsake.

Instructions

Difficulty: Easy

Things You’ll Need:

  • Heavy cardstock
  • Ruler
  • Pencil
  • Scissors
  • Paint samples or scrap paper
  • Glue
  • Old magazines or books
  • Hole punch
  • Yarn or ribbon
Step1
Measure a piece of cardstock 2 ½ inches wide by 7 inches long. Mark the dimensions lightly with a pencil, and then use the scissors to cut out your bookmark.
Step2
Determine the layout of the paint samples or scrap paper and cut the pieces to size, according to your design. You could also tear the pieces to give them an interesting edge.
Step3
Use the glue to secure your pattern to the cardstock. Cut off any material that hangs over the edge of the bookmark.
Step4
Look through some old magazines or books and select a small picture, word or phrase that grabs your attention. Cut it down to size and glue it to the top of the bookmark.
Step5
Punch a hole in the top center of the bookmark with the hole puncher. Cut a piece of yarn or ribbon about 12-inches long and thread it through the hole. Tie the two sides together at the base of the bookmark.
Step6
Let the bookmark dry completely.

Tips & Warnings

  • You also could use pieces of wrapping paper or children's artwork to cover your cardstock.
  • You can purchase clear contact paper to laminate the bookmark at your local crafts store.
