There are two different types of flower decorations you can make for polymer clay bowls. One is the flower cane, in which different strips of clay are rolled together to create a flower design on a round shape. The other is a free-standing flower, like a rose.

Things You'll Need:

  • Clay
  • Knife
  • Rolling pin

    Flower Cane Decoration

  1. Step 1

Choose three contrasting colors for your flower cane. One color is the center, one is for the petals and the other is the fill in color. Separate the petal color and the fill-in color into two pieces, with one piece big enough to roll into a rectangle.

  2. Step 2

Use a rolling pin to roll one piece of the petal color and the fill-in color into rectangles. Roll the center color into a long log with your hands. Wrap the petal rectangle around the center log and cut off the excess clay.

  3. Step 3

Roll the rest of the petal color into six logs, the same length as the center log. Place the petal logs around the center log in a flower shape.

  4. Step 4

Roll the fill-in pieces in your palms, and then push them into the spaces between the petal logs. Wrap the fill-in color rectangle around the entire flower. Roll it back and forth to seal and combine the colors.

  5. Step 5

Slice the flower cane in disc shapes about 1/4-inch thick. You should see the flower in the center of the bead. Apply these to your clay bowl and bake.

  6. Clay Rose

  7. Step 1

Mix your clay colors to create the color of a rose, and then roll the clay into a ball the size of your rose. Divide the ball into seven pieces, all about the same size.

  8. Step 2

Roll the smallest piece between your thumb and forefinger and press it into a petal shape. The top edge should be thicker than the bottom. Your petal should resemble a guitar pick.

  9. Step 3

Fold the edges of the petal, with the thickest part pointing down. Overlap the edges and repeat the process for the next largest piece of clay, making the next petal slightly larger. Wrap the second petal around the first.

  10. Step 4

Create the third petal and wrap it around the other two, creating a spiral shape. Continue forming the rest of the petals in this way until you have a rose.

  11. Step 5

Squeeze the base of the rose to blend the flower and mesh the clay together. Cut off any excess clay and add the rose to your clay bowl.
