Polymer clay is a soft craft clay, but you still need to work to make it pliable enough to begin your crafts projects. This is called "conditioning" the clay, and the warmth of your hands coupled with stretching and working with the clay will be enough to do the job.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Polymer clay
  • Table
  • Waxed or parchment paper
  • Tape
  1. Step 1

Purchase a soft polymer clay. The softer the clay, the easier it will be to create your projects.

  2. Step 2

Tape a square of waxed paper or parchment paper to the table. Tape the paper all the way around so it will not come up as you work with the clay.

  3. Step 3

Pinch off a small square of the clay. Knead the square on the table with your fingers.

  4. Step 4

Roll out the clay into a long snake and bring it back into a ball. Do this several times.

  5. Step 5

Ball up the clay by rolling it in your hands in a circular motion and then roll it into a snake in your hands. Repeat this step several times.

  6. Step 6

Work with the clay until you feel that it is soft enough to use.

Tips & Warnings
  • Prep the clay to speed the conditioning process. Place it in a warm place for a few minutes before rolling. Do not place the clay in direct sunlight.
  • Add softening agents to your clay if your conditioning doesn't supply the desired result. Add 1 to 2 drops of mineral oil or some petroleum jelly or purchase clay softening agents made at a crafts store.
