Cloth grocery bags have become a necessity due to landfill capacities. Make your own bags from sturdy cloth and add all of the pockets you think you will need. With a few sewing skills and few easy tips, you will be on your way.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  1. Step 1

Decide what you will store in a pocket. Bottles need a long pocket on the side, while many small items need large pockets on the inside. An outside pocket can hold flat items.

  2. Step 2

Lay your pocket fabric on your cutting area. Fold back 1 inch of fabric on the topmost side of the inside. Pin this down on the inside. Fold a small bit of the fabric under and pin it so that the threads do not fray.

  3. Step 3

Attach the pocket to the appropriate area of the grocery bag. Pin in place after checking that the pocket is straight.

  4. Step 4

Sew around the sides and bottom of the pocket. Start on the left side and sew 1/4 inch from the outside edge. Reinforce, or backstitch, at the beginning and the end.

  5. Step 5

Cut away extra threads so your grocery pocket is neat. Smooth the pocket and press with an iron.
