You can stuffed and then sewn together a sock puppet, or you can make a simpler version by drawing a face on your sock and sticking it on your hand. These steps detail how to stuff both types of sock puppets.

Difficulty: Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Stuffing material
  • Scissors
  • Needle and thread

    Stuff a Simple Sock Puppet

  1. Step 1

Draw a 5-inch oval on a piece of cardboard or poster board. You can use old cereal boxes for cardboard scrap.

  2. Step 2

Put a horizontal dotted line in the center of the oval. Cut it out and fold it along the line. This is what you will stuff the mouth of the sock puppet with.

  3. Step 3

Stuff the folded cardboard mouthpiece into the toe area of the sock. Glue the extra toe material inside the cardboard mouth and decorate the face.

  4. Stuff a Sewn Sock Puppet

  5. Step 1

Gather cotton balls, old nylons, shredded foam rubber or polyfill for a sewn sock puppet. Get more than you think you'll need, since sock puppets take quite a bit of stuffing to make them full and cuddly.

  6. Step 2

Cut your sock puppet so that the legs connect with the body. This leaves a slit in the crotch area. Use this slit to stuff the body, head and legs of the sock puppet.

  7. Step 3

Stuff the arms by cutting the top part of the sock into two pieces. You will need to seam the ends and then stuff the arms. Firmly pack the stuffing if you want nice, tight arms.

  8. Step 4

Take the heel of the sock off and then stitch up the bottom of the heel back onto the sock. Stuff the mouth and face area, and then stitch up the top of the sock. This area is part of the snout and face of the sock puppet, so stuff it firmly.

  9. Step 5

Fill up a tail for your sock puppet the same way you stuffed the rest of the body and face. The more stuffing you use, the stiffer the tail gets. For a tail that wags more, use less stuffing.
