A valance can add visual interest to any room. Using basic sewing skills, a board and a staple gun, you can create your own valance at home. Use these steps to cut the lining for your valance fabric.

Difficulty: Easy
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Examine the valance fabric selected for your straight valance. The weight, color, and weave of the valance fabric determine which lining you will buy.

  2. Step 2

Cut the fabric. If the valance fabric is tightly woven, relatively heavy and a solid color, you may use a second piece of valance fabric for lining. Otherwise, you may need to purchase white blackout fabric.

  3. Step 3

Lay out your lining fabric on a table or other flat surface. Using a tape measure or ruler, measure a block the same size and shape as your block of valance fabric.

  4. Step 4

Mark the edges of the block of fabric with pins, a fabric pencil or temporary fabric pen. Do not use a regular pencil, which may smudge, or a regular pen, which may bleed ink.

  5. Step 5

Use scissors or a rotary cutter and ruler to cut the lining fabric. Check your block of fabric against the block of valance fabric to ensure they are the same size and shape, and adjust one or both blocks as necessary.

Tips & Warnings
  • If using a rotary cutter, always make sure you are cutting over a safe surface, such as a cutting board made specifically for rotary cutters. Cutting directly on a table or floor may damage the surface you are cutting on.
