This project uses items you probably already have around the house to make a musical rain stick for your little ones to play with. You can even make a few rain sticks with sound variations to form an entire band.

Difficulty: Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Cardboard tube
  • Brown paper bag
  • Scissors
  • 2 rubber bands
  • Newspaper sheets
  • Filler (beans, rice, popcorn kernels)
  • Paint
  • Markers
  1. Step 1

Wad a sheet of newspaper into compacts balls small enough to roll around in your tube. Prepare a few balls ahead of time to be added later.

  2. Step 2

Make the caps for your rain stick by cutting 2 circles out of a paper bag. Each circle should be large enough to hang over the edge of the tube. Center one circle on the end of the tube. Fold the edges of the circle down around the tube and use a rubber band to hold it in place.

  3. Step 3

Drop one ball of newspaper into the tube. Pour in a handful of your rice, beans or other filler. Cover the other end of the tube with your hand. Test the sound by turning the tube over slowly to hear the filler falling down the tube.

  4. Step 4

Add 1 to 2 more newspaper balls to make the filler move more slowly through the tube creating a longer sound. Add more filler to make a louder noise. Adjust the number of balls and the amount of filler until you have the sound you desire.

  5. Step 5

Wrap the second circle on the open end of the tube and hold it in place with a rubber band.

  6. Step 6

Paint the outside your rain stick or use markers to draw designs if you can't wait for the paint to dry before playing with your new toy.
