Things You'll Need:
- Cardboard tube
- Construction paper
- 2 rubber bands
- Foil
- Filler (beans, rice, popcorn kernels)
- Paint or markers
-
Step 1
Set your tube upright on one piece of construction paper. Draw a circle around your tube, then make a second circle about an inch wider than the first. Cut the construction paper along the wider circle, and then cut another circle the same size.
-
Step 2
Place one of the construction paper circles on one end of your tube. Fold down the edges of the circle around the tube. Wrap a rubber band around the circle to hold it in place.
-
Step 3
Tear a strip of foil off the roll about an inch wide, or a little wider if you have a large tube. Twist the strip lengthwise as tightly as you can. Repeat with another strip of foil.
-
Step 4
Twist the two strips of foil together at one end. Leave an inch or so open and then twist the two together again. Repeat to the end of the foil strips.
-
Step 5
Insert strips into the open side of the tube. Pour about 1/2 cup of your filler into the tube. Cover the open end of the tube with you hand and turn the rain stick upside down to hear the sound the filler makes.
-
Step 6
Adjust your rain stick's sound if necessary. If the filler falls too fast, add more foil strips to your rain stick. If the filler is falling at the right pace, but the sound doesn't last long enough, add more filler.
-
Step 7
Close off the other end of the tube with the other circle of construction paper and wrap a rubber band around it.
-
Step 8
Finish your rain stick by painting the outside and drawing designs with markers.
