Kasha is a grain-based dish common in Jewish, Russian and eastern European cuisines. Most home cooks serve kasha along with egg noodles to make a dish called kasha and noodles or kasha varnishkas. Learn how to serve this healthy and satisfying dish with your next meal.

Instructions

Difficulty: Easy

Things You’ll Need:

  • Kasha
  • Bow tie egg noodles
  • Spatula
  • Melted butter or margarine
  • Serving spoon
Step1
Stir the kasha in the hot pan gently with a spatula to separate the grains. This also gives the kasha a fluffy appearance and texture.
Step2
Remove the kasha from the hot pan and place it into a large bowl.
Step3
Mix the kasha with hot, cooked bow tie egg noodles. You can use either small or large bowtie noodles. Find bow tie egg noodles with the other pasta or in the kosher or Jewish foods section of your local grocery store.
Step4
Add a few tablespoons of hot, melted butter or margarine to the kasha and noodles. Stir to combine all of the ingredients.
Step5
Spoon the kasha and noodles (kasha varnishkas) alongside your favorite entree. Kasha varnishkas is a good accompaniment to fish or chicken entrees. Serve hot.

Tips & Warnings

  • You can use any grain to make kasha. Traditionally, cooks use buckwheat, but other good choices for grains include barley, wheat and oats.
  • Traditionally, kasha varnishkas consist of kasha placed into a dough resembling a knish.
  • You can also eat kasha and noodles as delicious and hearty entree.
  • Don't stir the kasha too vigorously in Step 1, or you can make the kasha have a mushy texture.
