Caraway will add a savory flavor to the dumplings, which will plump up fat and golden when you add them to your country chicken stew. Country chicken stew with light, fluffy caraway dumplings is a perfect comfort food for a cold winter evening, but it is just as delicious any time of year.

Instructions

Difficulty: Moderate

Things You’ll Need:

  • 1 1/2 cup all purpose flour
  • 2 tsp. baking powder
  • 1/2 cup corn meal
  • 1 tbsp. white sugar
  • 1 3/4 cup cream
  • Salt
  • Freshly ground black pepper

Step1
Place the all purpose flour in a medium sized mixing bowl. Stir in the baking powder, cornmeal and white sugar, mixing until the ingredients are thoroughly blended.
Step2
Add the cream to the dry ingredients and stir until the cream and dry ingredients are completely incorporated.
Step3
Season the dough with salt and freshly ground black pepper to taste. Stir it well. Let the dough rest for at least 30 minutes while you prepare the country chicken stew.
Step4
Drop the caraway dumpling dough by spoonfuls into the simmering country chicken stew.

Tips & Warnings

  • If you prepare the country chicken stew in a slow cooker, remove the stew and put it in a soup pot or dutch oven before adding the dumplings. Dumplings don't cook well in a slow cooker, and they will turn out heavy and doughy rather than light and fluffy unless you make the switch.
