One of the first steps for preparing salmon in a skillet is getting the cooking oil hot enough to begin sautéing the garlic. Here is how to heat oil for salmon.

Difficulty: Easy
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Pour a generous amount of olive oil into a nonstick skillet. There should be enough olive oil to cover the bottom of the pan, with a bit extra besides.

  2. Step 2

Turn the burner of the stove to medium or medium-high. Medium-high will heat the oil faster, but should be used by if you are experienced with heating sautéing. Novices should start slowly.

  3. Step 3

Coat the rest of the skillet as the oil heats up. Grasp the skillet handle and sway the skillet from side to side until the oil laps up to the edges and the coat is even.

  4. Step 4

Test the oil to determine if it is hot enough to begin sautéing the garlic. Add a bit of garlic to the skillet. If the oil begins to bubble up and sizzle around the minced garlic, it is now ready for the next step in the salmon preparation.
