You've chosen some ripe and beautiful bananas at the supermarket, but the next thing you know, they've developed brown spots. Although they are still edible, they'll quickly spoil. A few tips can keep those beautiful yellow bananas from turning rotten.

Instructions

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Step1
Mist the bananas lightly with lemon juice. The lemon juice won't affect the flavor of the banana, but will keep them from developing brown spots so quickly.
Step2
Purchase a "banana hammock," a wooden stand with a hook that holds the bunch of bananas. This method of storing bananas keeps air circulating, helping to keep them yellow longer.
Step3
Store bananas on the counter with the curved side up. This way, air is allowed to flow under and around the bananas.
Step4
Purchase bananas that are slightly green, and they will soon be perfectly ripe and ready to eat.

Tips & Warnings

  • Don't store bananas in the refrigerator. Refrigeration speeds deterioration.
  • Don't throw out soft, brown bananas. They're perfect for banana bread or banana pancakes.
  • Don't store your bananas in a bowl with other fruits. Bananas produce ethylene gas which quickly can spoil the other fruits.
