Homemade braided bread takes a bit of effort to make, but the result is plump and golden, and so beautiful it's almost a shame to eat it.

Difficulty: Moderate
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Prepared braided bread on non-stick baking pan
  • Egg
  • Fork
  • Small bowl
  • Pastry brush
  • Coarse sea salt (optional)
  • Whole peppercorns (optional)
  • Poppy seeds or sesame seeds (optional)
  1. Step 1

Preheat the oven to 350 degrees.

  2. Step 2

Crack the whole egg into a small bowl and beat it well with a fork.

  3. Step 3

Use a pastry brush and brush the beaten egg over the braided bread. Be sure to take your time and carefully brush every bit of the bread, including the seams where the braids join. The egg coating will make the bread shiny and golden, and will also help the braids not to separate during baking.

  4. Step 4

Sprinkle poppy seeds or sesame seeds lightly over the bread, if you choose to use them.

  5. Step 5

Grind some fresh salt and whole pepper over the braided bread, if you choose to.

  6. Step 6

Place the braided bread in the preheated oven and bake it for about 30 minutes.

  7. Step 7

Remove the hot braided bread from the baking pan and allow it to cool on a wire rack before serving.

Tips & Warnings
  • Try adding a few raisins or dried cranberries to the bread. If you do this, don't add the seeds, salt and pepper to the top.
  • If you like a sweet bread, replace the savory seasonings on top of the bread with some brown sugar.
