A man's sideburns are often an extension of his hairstyle. Whether you wear mutton chops or clean-shaven sideburns, from time to time your style requires a trim. Prepare for the trim with daily care of the face and facial hair, including the sideburns. Using warm water, clean the face with a deep-cleansing, nonsoapy face wash that does not include alcohol, like Carol's Daughter Wash-Away the Oil Gentle Face Wash (see Resources below). Even take time to massage the cleanser into your sideburns. This cleansing step makes the hair bristles more accessible by softening and lifting them.

Pat-dry your face before you cut your hair. Comb the sideburns in the direction the hair grows and use an electric razor or trimmer with a guard attachment to trim them. Hold the trimmer or razor in front of the face vertically. Then trim the sideburns using downward strokes.
