Follow these steps to create an inside-out French braid.

Difficulty: Moderately Challenging
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Hair spray
  • Spray water bottle
  • Rat-tail comb
  • Hair bands
  1. Step 1

Brush the hair so that it's smooth and tangle-free. Mist it with a little water or hair spray to prevent any flyaway hairs. Decide where the braid is to start.

  2. Step 2

Start at the crown and use a rat-tail comb to section off and gather the hair for the braid. Pull the section of hair up and away from the head. Make a "peace" sign with the fingers of one hand, and use it to divide the hair into three even strands.

  3. Step 3

Use both hands to braid the hair, pulling the sections taut throughout. Hold two sections in the left hand and the third section in the right hand. Bring the right-hand section under, rather than over, the middle section, and grab it with the left hand.

  4. Step 4

Take the outside section from the left hand and bring it under what is now the middle strand. Be sure to maintain tension on the hair strands. Always pull the hair under the middle strand.

  5. Step 5

Continue the braid, bringing the outside strands under the middle strand, alternating left and right. Pick up and add hair from either side of the head to the outside strands before weaving it under the middle strand.

  6. Step 6

Work down the back of the head, braiding down the center while pulling in additional hair each time. Notice that the braid, instead of lying flat, has more dimension and stands out from the back of the head.

  7. Step 7

Fasten the braid with an elastic band. Add hair ornaments as desired.
