Cutting curly hair requires the hair to be thoroughly cleaned and rinsed before cutting. Curly hair responds best to being cut if it is wet. Although rinsing out the shampoo from a customer's hair is standard procedure, it is especially important to rinse out shampoo from curly hair well before cutting.

Difficulty: Easy
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Shampoo the customer's hair twice. Use warm water, and be sure the customer is comfortable in the chair while washing her hair.

  2. Step 2

Run your fingers through the hair to separate the various layers. This gives the best results when rinsing hair. It is especially important to rinse deep down to the scalp with thick curly hair. Thick hair can hold onto shampoo, especially near the scalp.

  3. Step 3

Run warm water along the scalp line. This area is vulnerable to the drying effects of shampoo and should be rinsed out carefully and completely.

  4. Step 4

Relax the customer with a gentle but vigorous scalp massage while rinsing. This extra personal touch will always be appreciated and soothes the customer's nerves as well.

  5. Step 5

Add some conditioner to the rinsed hair. The conditioner will help hold the hair in place while cutting. Use a conditioner properly suited for the individual's exact hair type.
