Instructions

Massage your favorite oil--olive or pomegranate--into your hair after washing it but before applying the conditioner. Comb the oil through to the tips. This adds natural moisture to the hair.

Apply conditioner beginning at the ends instead of the roots. Place conditioner in your palms and rub it onto the hair from the tips up. Use moisturizing conditioners with oils such as coconut, olive or jojoba because curly hair needs extra moisture. The Curls website offers a natural oil conditioner called Coconut Sublime (see Resources).

Use a hand-held shampoo massager to penetrate the hair. The shampoo massager tool is useful for applying conditioner to all of the hair and not just the scalp. Add conditioner to the hair using the shampoo massager to work the conditioner into the curls by rubbing the conditioner into sections of the hair in a circular motion. Beauty supply stores sell scalp massagers at reasonable prices.

Rub your scalp after you rinse the conditioner to be sure excess conditioner does not remain on the scalp. You may want to apply conditioner only to the ends of the hair to ensure that too much conditioner is not left on the scalp, which can cause dandruff.

Tips & Warnings

  • Stay away from conditioners and shampoos with alcohol and detergents.

  • Use conditioners that target course, curly or kinky hair; it should help the curls and detangle the hair.
