Curly hair can be tricky to cut. You do not want the cut to look bushy on the bottom. You can avoid this with the way that you cut and layer the hair. Angling curly hair as you cut it will help keep the curls falling smoothly.

Difficulty: Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Spray water bottle
  • Comb
  • Hair clips
  • Scissors for cutting hair
  1. Step 1

Wet the hair. Then comb the hair to remove any tangles. Section the hair to begin cutting it.

  2. Step 2

Begin with the back section. Section the hair starting at the bottom and trim to the desired length. Remember that curly hair will shrink when dry to about an inch shorter, so cut longer than the desired length. Continue until you reach the top layer of hair.

  3. Step 3

Comb the top layer of hair down and pull it out. Slightly release the tension on the hair and cut the top layer slightly longer than the layers beneath it. This will help the curly hair to look the same length, instead of looking layered.

  4. Step 4

Move to a side section and begin cutting the hair in sections starting at the bottom. Comb over hair from the back to measure the length against. Continue cutting, comparing each section to the back section. Remember to cut the top layer slightly longer than the other layers.

  5. Step 5

Repeat on the other side of the head.

  6. Step 6

Check the hair to make sure it is even. Trim any hairs that you may have missed, and style the hair.

Tips & Warnings
  • Curly hair shrinks more than straight hair. Be sure to allow extra length when you are cutting the hair.
  • Be cautious if you are tempted to thin curly hair. This may cause the hair to become frizzy and more out of control.
