Step 1
Look around your vehicle before moving, using your mirrors to look for anything that may be in the way. Also watch for anything that may approach the trailer, as they could get into the space you need as well.
-
Step 2
Signal early to warn other drivers of your intended action. Most cars and pedestrians will take heed to this and make space for you when pulling a trailer.
-
Step 3
Be courteous to other drivers. Do not race them for space or try to squeeze them out. If they get into a space you need, simply signal again and take the space after they pass.
-
Step 4
Allow extra room for a wide turn when pulling a trailer. With the added length of a trailer behind you, you may need more than twice the room for a turn. Swing into an extra lane if needed and take more room than needed if traffic allows.
-
Step 5
Watch behind you as you begin your wide swing for vehicles or pedestrians that enter or may enter the space you need to complete your turn when pulling the trailer.
-
Step 6
Continue to watch behind you as you complete your turn to be sure the trailer you pull has successfully made the bend without jumping the curb or bumping into any objects.
-
Step 7
Return your vehicle combination to a single lane and plan ahead for your next turn or lane change by constantly checking your mirrors for traffic that may get in the way.
