When towing a trailer, one of the most important things you must do is set up your mirrors properly to see the trailer. Without this crucial task, you will not be able to see trouble when it happens with your trailer, or know where traffic or obstacles are while driving. You will also rely greatly on the use of properly set mirrors when backing up a trailer.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Park your vehicle and trailer in a straight line without any jackknife or bend in the combination.

  2. Step 2

Add side mirror extenders if the trailer or load you carry obstructs your view and prevents safe travel. Properly secure the extender mirrors to your vehicle and check for correct fit.

  3. Step 3

Sit upright in the driver seat and set the mirrors vertically so that the horizon is in the middle of your line of sight in the mirror reflection.

  4. Step 4

Adjust the mirrors horizontally so that the trailers tires are just barely visible on the inside edge of the reflection. This will allow you to see the lane next to your trailer as well as a more complete view of the trailer while turning.

  5. Step 5

Check the rearview mirror mounted on the windshield of your vehicle. If your load is taller than your car, then obviously you will not need to use the rearview mirror. If the load is shorter than your vehicle, set this mirror centered over the trailer to help properly guide you while backing up the trailer or checking on traffic behind you.

Tips & Warnings
  • Using the incorrect mirrors may cause them to become bouncy or loose, or even cause them to fall off the car completely rendering them useless.
  • Always get out and look behind your trailer if you have any doubt about what is behind you. Even a small trailer can completely hide large objects from view.
