Things You'll Need:
- Electrical tester
-
Step 1
Inspect the hitch on both the trailer and the vehicle before you try to hook up the trailer. Make sure all bolts are secure on both hitches. Also make sure the ball on the trailer fits into the hitch on your trailer.
-
Step 2
Check the electrical wiring. Use a safety tester to make sure the turn signal, running lights, brake lights and backing lights are all functioning properly. Also make sure there are no worn or broken wires on the electrical hookup either on the vehicle or the trailer.
-
Step 3
Raise the trailer hitch high enough to get the vehicle's hitch under it. The wheels of the trailer should already have a chock under them so that the vehicle doesn't roll. Make sure the chocks are firmly in position.
-
Step 4
Back the vehicle slowly up to the trailer. You may need someone to direct you. The ball of the vehicle's hitch should be directly under the hitch on the trailer.
-
Step 5
Use the trailer's jack to lower the trailer on to the hitch. Make sure the trailer is at the proper towing elevation in relation to the vehicle.
-
Step 6
Secure and lock the fastenings. Hook up the safety chains to the vehicle. Connect the electrical system.
-
Step 7
Remove the chocks and stow them for the next time you need them. Slowly pull the vehicle away from its parking space.
