A motorcycle can be a prized possession. Naturally, bike owners do everything they can to keep their equipment scratch-free. There are things you can do to protect a motorcycle from scratches, whether you're on a ride, repairing the bike or storing it for the winter.

Difficulty: Moderate
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Blanket
  • Painter's tape
  • Vinyl protection kit
  1. Step 1

Ride on pavement whenever possible. Dirt roads sandblast the chrome and loose gravel can fly up and damage your bike. Even if you ride very slowly down a dirt road, another vehicle can drive by and kick up a hail storm of stones.

  2. Step 2

Park a motorcycle well away from other vehicles. Between door dings, people careless with shopping carts and children who can't keep their hands off, your bike is in dangerous territory when parked near other vehicles. A few extra steps are a small price to pay to protect your investment.

  3. Step 3

Designate a parking spot for your bike in the garage. Keep a clean path all the way around it so you can walk by without touching the bike. Zippers and snaps from your clothing can scratch your motorcycle if you squeeze next to it. Park the bike away from items that can fall and damage it, including items on shelves above and next to it.

  4. Step 4

Toss an old, soft blanket over your motorcycle whenever you park it in the garage. Not only will it keep dust off the chrome, it'll protect the paint job, too.

  5. Step 5

Use painter's tape to protect the motorcycle when doing maintenance or repairs. Tape off all areas in the immediate work area. If you drop a part or a tool, the tape can protect the bike from damaging scratches.

  6. Step 6

Buy a paint protection kit. These pre-cut vinyl kits adhere to your fuel tank to protect against scratches and minor dings.

Tips & Warnings
  • Painter's tape works best because it leaves little or no residue behind, but any masking tape will work in a pinch.
  • A good wax job helps keep dust and dirt from scratching your bike.
  • Avoid off-road trips. Off-road trails frequently have low hanging branches on the path. Brushing by a tree limb can scratch or pit your paint. In addition, trails contain unexpected stumps, roots and rocks that can catch you off guard. If you spill the bike, you can wipe out an expensive paint job in seconds.
