Every new car and even the older models come with jacks. Locate and familiarize yourself with the one in your vehicle. You never know when it's going to come in handy so be sure you know how to use it. You may want to practice lifting and lowering your car, and if you have any questions make sure you ask an expert.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Read the instruction manual carefully before using a car jack, as there are many different types of jacks and the instructions may be different depending on the style, make and model of your car.

  2. Step 2

Locate the car jack. It is usually located under the bonnet or cover in the trunk and secured with a screw. Remove the spare wheel giving you access to the jack. Sometimes an extra step is required and you must attach the handle or lever to the jack.

  3. Step 3

Check and test the jack to be sure it is in good working order. Be sure all jack parts are easily accessible, located together and are in good working order.

  4. Step 4

Avoid accidents. Walk around your entire car to be sure there are no small children or animals anywhere near your car.

  5. Step 5

Lower the jack slowly and cautiously when you have finished the task. If you use a jack stand, you will need to raise the car slightly to pull the stand from its position before lowering your car.

Tips & Warnings
  • Be sure to use a pair of jack stands to secure your vehicle when it is raised.
  • Place some large rocks or blocks behind the wheels on the portion of the car that faces downhill.
