How to Do Both Bachata Dance Turns

Once the student has learned the left turn in bachata, the right turn is just as easy and so is doing both turns. The second turn can be started immediately after the hip bump of the first turn, without returning to the basic side steps of the bachata.

Difficulty: Moderate
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Begin with either the left or right turn, ending with the hip bump.

  2. Step 2

Keep your knee bent after the hip bump instead of straightening it. If you straighten your knee and then bend it again to step into the next turn, you will be late in starting the turn.

  3. Step 3

Turn in the other direction, ending with the hip bump.

  4. Step 4

Practice with a partner in the open dance position, releasing one hand and turning under your arm. Return to the open position (hands clasped), then release the other hand before turning under your arm.

  5. Step 5

Complete one turn under your arm without releasing your dance partner's hand, then turn in the other direction, "unwinding" yourself before returning to the open or closed dance position.

  6. Step 6

Release both hands so you and your dance partner can both perform the turns. After each two turns, the leader should indicate to his or her partner what the next steps should be.

Tips & Warnings
  • As you make your turn, your dance partner should be moving to the left or right along with you so you are facing one another at the end of the turn.
  • If your dance partner holds your hand during a turn under your arm, he or she should release the thumb and hold your hand loosely. As you turn, you will be turning your hand in your dance partner's hand so you can remain comfortable.
