Things You'll Need:
- Square paintbrush
- Round or blender brush
- Kiln

Step 1
Fire greenware and allow it to cool and dry completely. It will take the same amount of time to cool down as it did to fire your greenware in a kiln. Once greenware is fired, it's called bisque. Letting the bisque to dry completely will allow the pottery piece to absorb as much glaze as possible.
-
Step 2
Dip a paintbrush into the enamel glaze and get it as wet as possible. The glaze will go on much more smoothly when your brush is wet and full of paint. Once the brush begins to dry out, fill it with more glaze and continue.
-
Step 3
Apply three coats of a base glaze. Once this is completed and the glaze is dry you can use other paintbrushes to add detail and decoration to your piece.
-
Step 4
Use your creative talents and paint on a decorative scene of your choice. A round brush works best for flowers, fan brushes are used mostly for trees and textures and a blender brush is used for blending glazes and designs together to give a softer look. A night sky and beach or a beautiful bouquet of flowers are two of the most popular choices in painting with pottery glazes. Blend the colors together and allow it to dry completely before moving on to the final glaze.
-
Step 5
Paint on a final clear glaze coat. This will protect your painted pottery piece. A clear glaze will also bring out the vibrancy of the glaze color and give your piece an additional shine.
-
Step 6
Place your pottery in the kiln and fire it to finish the piece. Carefully load a glazed pottery piece into the kiln. If it has a coat of clear glaze on it, do not let the piece touch the sides of the kiln; if you do this, the clear glaze will attach to the sides. Place the pottery in the center of the kiln or at least an inch from the kiln sides and the same distance away from any other pottery pieces already loaded into the kiln.
