Step 1
Research your pet to determine what type of shelter he enjoys. Some reptiles simply want a shelter to hide under, often this is to hide from daylight. Other reptiles like to burrow into the ground, and are happier with a very low shelter.
-
Step 2
Consider all of the pets that you have in your terrarium if you have more than one. Research to find out if they like to curl up into the shelter together, of if they would each prefer their own shelter.
-
Step 3
Choose a shelter that is large enough to accommodate your pet after he has reached full size, if he is still a baby. Otherwise, be prepared to replace the shelter with a larger one as your pet grows.
-
Step 4
Visit a local pet store to purchase a shelter after you have determined what type and size you need. If you are not able to find a shelter that is large enough, you can use a plastic box or container and cut a hole in the side. If you are purchasing a shelter that is not marketed for use with pets, be sure you do not buy anything that says it is not safe to hold human food. These items are made with toxic materials that can harm your pet.
-
Step 5
Place your shelter inside of the terrarium for your pet to enjoy. It might take a few days for your pet to get used to the presence of the shelter, and understand it is not something to fear, before he begins using it.
