Snakes swallow their food whole and it usually takes a long time for this food to digest. Sometimes, in the process of digestion, snakes can get constipation. This is a condition when the snake is unable to pass feces properly. Here are some steps on how to identify and treat constipation in pet snakes.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Look at the snakes belly and abdomen area. If it is distended and feels like a balloon, the snake may be constipated. Also check the snakes cage to see if it has defecated. If not, then that is a good sign that the snake is suffering constipation.

  2. Step 2

Place the snake in warm water two to three times per day. The warm water should stimulate him to defecate. Make sure the water is warm and not hot. Put him in just enough water to cover his body.

  3. Step 3

Monitor the snake after putting him in warm water to see if he defecates. If not, you will have to take him to the veterinarian.

  4. Step 4

Allow the veterinarian to examine the snake. He may have to do surgery to remove the feces from the snake's belly.

  5. Step 5

Care for the snake after surgery. Many times a snake who has constipation surgery will also have other secondary problems.

  6. Step 6

Feed the snake according to the doctor's orders.
