How to Massage a Dog's Tail

When massage a dog, the tail is an important part to massage. No matter if the dog's tail is short or long, it should be massaged. When a dog has a short tail because of an amputation, they do not realize that their tail is not there. Here are some steps on how to massage a dog's tail.

Instructions
  1. Step 1

    Lay the dog on a towel or a mat on the floor. Pet the dog so that it lays down and relaxes.

  2. Step 2

    Massage the back bone down to the tail. The tail is an extension of the backbone, so start by massaging the dog's back bone.

  3. Step 3

    Grip the tail at the dog's behind with your hand. Do not squeeze the tail. Slowly run your hand down the length of the tail. If the dog as a short, amputated tail, continue to move your hand outward even after you have reached the end of the tail. Dog's believe that they have a whole tail and by doing this, the dog will think you are massaging his entire tail.

  4. Step 4

    Repeat Step 3 four to five times.

  5. Step 5

    Rub the backbone with the other hand while you massage the dog's tail. This will help the dog's entire backbone and tail to relax.

Tips & Warnings
  • Massage your dog once or twice a week. Dogs are like humans; they love massages.
  • Check for fleas, ticks, and other problems as you massage the dog.
  • Wash your hands after massaging the dog.
