How to Work With a Partner as a Clown

A clown partner helps take the stress off only one clown performer. It also combines two different talent pools so partygoers get a real treat. However, it's important to plan a routine so that each partner knows what they're supposed to do, and what to do during times when the routine doesn't go as planned.

Things You'll Need:

  • Props
  • Puppet
  1. Step 1

Choose a partner that you get along with on a personal basis, and one who complements your talent skills. Get together and plan your routine, making sure that each partner is given time to showcase their best skills for the audience.

  2. Step 2

Plan a routine that involves both of you performing at the same time. This can include one clown as the main attraction, while the other is the goofy sidekick. It can also be a routine where you throw bowling pins, balls, balloons or other silly items to each other.

  3. Step 3

Tell jokes to each other, with one clown encouraging the audience to answer. You can also perform skits with lines, or act out old Abbot and Costello routines with no talking.

  4. Step 4

Let one clown work the audience while the other performs. This could be one clown going through the audience talking to kids, asking them what their favorite animal is and the other clown can then make balloon animals according to what each kid likes.

  5. Step 5

Separate into stations at a party or event. One clown can face paint and tell jokes, while another makes balloon animals and performs magic tricks.

  6. Step 6

Work with a partner that doesn't actually walk and talk by creating a puppet character. This works well for a clown that isn't ready for a real partner, but wants to add a character to their routine. The puppet can talk to you, the audience, make faces, sing and dance.
