Keeping infants and toddlers safe is the top priority of parents. For a family who lives in an apartment or a home with multiple floors, windows can be one of the biggest dangers. Installing childproof window locks can be a fairly inexpensive and easy process that can save your child's life.

Instructions

Difficulty: Easy

Step1
Decide on the type of window lock you will use. There are many different types of window locks available, including alarms that go off when the window is opened, framed bars to go across an open window, and latches to keep a window either completely closed or open only a few inches.
Step2
Measure the window for installing window guards to make sure you get the right guard for your window. These are often expandable, with additional components, if need be. Most guards have child-safe spacing, but double check that there are no more than four inches between the bars, to prevent the child from getting his head stuck.
Step3
Clear the window of hanging blinds or curtains, just long enough to install the window guard. The guard can be installed on the inside or outside of the window frame. It is installed by drilling two holes into the window frame and affixing the guard with screws to the frame on one side, then tension holds it in place. It swings open into the room if need be.
Step4
Consider other window locking devices. There are wedges, locks for sliding windows that prevent children from sliding the window open and stoppers that hold the window in place.

Tips & Warnings

  • Don't forget to get cord wraps for all the mini-blinds to remove the threat of strangulation and never put a crib or bed near a window blind.
