Make Zwieback Toast for Babies

Zwieback toast is a great tool for parents as their baby enters the stage of teething and eating solid foods. Babies and toddlers love to gnaw on the hard, crunchy treats. Baby food manufacturers also know this and price their product accordingly. However, zwieback toast is relatively easy to make for babies by following these steps.

Instructions

    • 1

Prepare the dough you will be using to make the toast. You can make bread dough using your own recipe or use store bought frozen dough or bread.

    • 2

Bake the bread according the preparation directions. Again, this step depends on whether you choose to use your own bread recipe, frozen dough, or store bought bread.

    • 3

Allow the bread to cool a little. It doesn't have to be completely cool, just cool enough for you to slice.

    • 4

Slice the bread into 3/4 inch to 1-inch slices. Some recipes have you make buns and others recommend a long loaf of bread. In either case, you should be able to keep your slices consistent.

    • 5

Bake the slices on an ungreased cookie sheet on a lower heat setting for about 40 minutes to an hour. Your oven temperature should be anywhere from 250 to 300 degrees. The higher the temperature, the earlier you should start checking on the toast. The toast should be slightly brown on both sides and crunchy.

    • 6

Cool the zwieback toast slices completely before giving them to your baby.

    • 7

Store the zwieback toast in an airtight container. You can even make a big batch and store some in the freezer to keep it fresh. Keep in mind you may need to dry it out in the oven for a few minutes after it thaws.

Tips & Warnings

  • Use whole wheat bread to add extra nutritional value.

  • Monitor your baby closely when they have a piece of zwieback toast to prevent choking.
