How to Power Up a Bench Grinder

A bench grinder is an important piece of equipment in the woodworking or metal shop. Because of the high RPMs of the wheel, it's important to follow specific steps each time you power one up to prevent accidents and serious injuries.

1. Perform a safety check before using your bench grinder, beginning with the electrical cord. If there are worn or frayed areas, have a qualified service technician replace it before use.

2. Inspect the wheels for chips and cracks. A damaged wheel may shatter and become a dangerous projectile. Hand rotate a newly fitted wheel to make sure it's balanced and properly fitted before powering up your grinder.

3. Secure the tool rest, face shields and wheel guards. These are all safeguards to protect you in the event that a wheel shatters. Never operate a bench grinder without these safety features in place.

4. Adjust the tool rest before you start a job. There should be a 1/16-inch gap between the wheel and the tool rest, with the tool rest being the same height as the center of the wheel.

5. Wear face protection, ear plugs, leather gloves and apron. Most serious injuries occur when a wheel shatters, and it's vital that you are wearing the appropriate safety gear in the event that this happens.

6. Stand to the side of the bench grinder when you turn it on. Allow it to get up to speed and run for a minute or two, listening for vibrations or any other unfamiliar sounds. When you're satisfied that your bench grinder is running properly, move to the front. If you have any doubts, turn the grinder off, unplug it and have a qualified technician service it.
