The turbine in the Hayward Aquabug provides the power for the cleaner. It sits cross-ways in the lower middle body and rides on two bearings. As the Aquabug intakes water, the turbine spins and runs the gearbox and upper middle turbine. These moving parts keep the Aquabug moving in its random pattern during the cleaning cycle. Here's how to remove the turbine.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Electric drill with a 1/4-inch drive bit holder and a Phillip's head bit
  1. Step 1

Lay the Aquabug upside down on the work bench to access the bottom of the cleaner.

  2. Step 2

Remove the 5 screws holding the suction plate, the throat and the bottom assembly in place. Put all screws in a container as you remove them from each section. Pull out the bottom assembly and set it aside.

  3. Step 3

Locate the 6 screws holding the base plate in place and unscrew them. Lift the base plate assembly off and set it aside.

  4. Step 4

Hold your hand over the lower middle assembly and turn the Aquabug right side up. The lower middle assembly will drop into your hand. Place it on the work bench and set the rest of the cleaner aside. Be careful, since all the parts in the lower middle assembly are only held in place by gravity.

  5. Step 5

Lift out the large black turbine assembly. It sits cross ways in the lower middle assembly and has a bearing on each end of the shaft. The turbine and bearings will come out together.

  6. Step 6

Pull each bearing off the shaft and inspect it to be sure all the ball bearings are there and the bearing shield is intact.

  7. Step 7

Inspect the turbine to be sure it is not warped and that it has no cracks.
