Step 1
Choose deep earthy colors if the recipient of the arrangement is male. For a female, opt for pastels and rich pinks and orchids. Although there is no hard and fast rule, the general technique of arranging flowers is to suit the recipient of the arrangement.
-
Step 2
Start with a specimen flower to create height in your arrangement. The bird-of-paradise is a tropical favorite with its tall strong stem that culminates in a colorful orange, yellow or red flower that resembles a brightly feathered bird. Choose an odd number, 3, 5 or 7 for your arrangement.
-
Step 3
Add sprays of red ginger, picking a shade that compliments your specimen flower. The ginger should be slightly shorter than the bird-of-paradise. Cut the length of the stem so the bloom falls just below that of the specimen flower.
-
Step 4
Create a cooling effect by adding green foliage or light green blooms. Light green roses are a good choice to add a cooling effect with more blooms. Choose those of a smaller variety. Tropical sprays and ferns soften a brightly colored bouquet.
-
Step 5
Carry through with a color theme in your arrangement. By choosing two or three flowers that represent one hue on the color wheel, you create an attractive arrangement. White and green may be added to all arrangements, but be careful not to overwhelm the theme colors with too much white.
-
Step 6
Check your arrangement for symmetry by viewing it from different angles. The most important flowers dominate and the other elements will complement and fill in the spaces. Use the rules as a guideline but allow your creativity to shine. A single tropical orchid in a clear floral bowl can make a powerful impact.
