Having a toasty fire on a cold winter day requires some maintenance that anyone with the right tools can do. Using a vacuum in a fireplace is an efficient fireplace maintenance method. Specially designed fireplace vacuums are very useful home maintenance tools. Vacuum out the fireplace before a harsh winter's day and enjoy cozy warmth all night.

Difficulty: Easy
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Remove the fireplace grate and set it onto an old blanket or newspaper. The grate doesn't need to be cleaned, but some people choose to clean it.

  2. Step 2

Sweep out all the ashes. Be careful when dumping the pan. Be sure to sweep up any large pieces of ash and wood, as those could clog the vacuum.

  3. Step 3

Use the brush attachment on the vacuum. The brush works best for picking up stray ashes and for reaching into the corners and along the edges.

  4. Step 4

Run the vacuum around the back of the fireplace and work your way towards the front. This minimizes the amount of extra effort. Pay close attention to the mortar joints and the crevices.

  5. Step 5

Push the bristles into the front edges of the fireplace to pick up as much ash as possible. The bristles are stiff and will dig out the caked on ash and help get that fireplace in shape for painting or other maintenance activities.
